The year 2020 has certainly been a roller coaster ride for everyone irrespective of anything. The
world turned upside down, the lives of people shattered, some went home less the others lost
their dear ones. The year majorly witnessed the destruction of lives, the ratio of good things
happening was extremely low. There was morbid sadness everywhere, but that’s how life goes
on, one has to find happiness in between the sadness, the good amidst the bed.
Every month was challenging for everyone, with the outbreak of the virus being the highlight of
the year and making the lives of people gruesome let’s not forget to look for the silver lining.
There were a few good things which went unnoticed. So, we have come up with the list of
fortunate and unfortunate happenings of the year 2020.
January
The start of the year wasn’t as happy as it used to be. It was alarming, disturbing and so much
more than words can explain. The month of January marked as the outbreak of the novel
corona virus, kicked off as the mysterious virus, with no significant symptoms identified till then.
The WHO declared the outbreak of the virus as Pandemic which definitely was an alarming
situation.

February
Amidst the unfortunate happenings there did happen a good thing in the film industry. In the
92nd Academy Awards the film Parasite won so many awards. Parasite being the foremost non-
English film grabbed a number of awards; Best Picture, Best Director,Best Actor.

March
Though March overall was a tough call for everyone out there, it was the pre-lockdown period
but the starting of March was still sweeter, during the first week of March something good
happened which should be remembered.
On 5th of March, Egypt reopened the Pyramid of Djoser after a 14 -year of refurbishment. This
Pyramid of Djoser is considered as one of the ancient stone structures of its size across the
globe. Another historical thing that took place during March was the recovery of a second HIV
patient, the 40 year old Adam Casteilljo revealed his identity to the world as he got cured of HIV,
giving the world a Hope.

April
During April, people were getting used to not meeting others, maintaining social distancing
experience this whole new kind of experience of staying indoors all the while as lockdown was
imposed to save people from getting infected by the virus. As there were no vehicles running on
the roads and everything being shut down the pollution was reducing. Nature was healing,
people believed, this got proven when NASA Satellite images showed it, the picture of a
particular part of the region of the USA showed this, this was observed in other parts of the
world as well, definitely a good sign for mankind. The capital of India, Delhi for the first time in a
long period of time experienced clear visibility, pure air and so much more in favour of us.
May
May witnessed cruelty, somewhat racism and other unfortunate happenings.A black man
George Floyd was killed which led to the protest throughout the USA. The USA witnessed riots,
clashes between citizens and cops.The protests kept increasing in different areas, most of the
places the protests were peaceful but in some areas it was brewing, intense and rageful. Also in
May2020, Costa Rica legalized the same sex marriage hence taking one step ahead in
providing equal right to the LGBTQ COMMUNITY.

June
The sixth month of the leap year wasn’t pleasant. A catastrophic damage was witnessed by
Russia, in the Russian state of Norilsk,20,000 tons of fuel spilled into a river. The Russian
President Vladimir Putin called it an emergency situation.
On June 27, Delhi faced a locust attack as a swarm of locusts invaded the country.

The Covid 19 continued to grill the world and India had rapid increase in the cases each day,
online classes continued, exams got postponed some were cancelled there did come something
in the education system, the NEP was introduced in the Cabinet. The New Education Policy
emphasised was brought in with a whole new concept, introduction of new subjects, flexibility in
choosing subjects, making the national institutes multi disciplinary and so on.

August
August the 8th month of the year yet was full of highs and lows; one amongst the so many
happenings is the resignation of Japan’s Prime Minister. Shinzo Abe, the longest serving Prime
Minister of Japan on August 28, declared his resignation; he resigned due to health issues.
Shinzo Abe was suffering from colitis, a bowel disease which has no cure. Abe also showed his
grief on resigning amidst the Pandemic.

September
On September 30,Togo’s first female prime minister Victoire Tomegah Dogbe was appointed.
October
In October,Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice jointly was awarded with the
Nobel Prize for Medicine for the discovery of hepatitis C virus. Also in French Open Women’s
Tennis: 19 year old Iga Świątek from Poland won her country’s first singles major title; by
beating American Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1.
November
All the US Election buzz came to halt when the election results came out, Joe Biden won the
Presidential elections and became the 46th President along with Kamala Harris who turned to
be the first female Vice President of the USA.

December
The month of December in History would be known as the Vaccine month as many there is
news of only Vaccines across the world, definitely giving people a little thing to get happy. As
many vaccines are passing the parameters, countries like Spain are all set to start the
vaccination from December 27th. Pfizer has also started to transport.
